Which societies should you register with?
Almost nobody needs all of them, and almost everybody is missing at least one. Pick where you are based and what you do — you will get the specific organisations, what each one collects, and a step-by-step guide for every one.

For the songs you wrote
The composition side. These collect when your song is streamed, broadcast or performed — separately from anything your distributor pays you.
For the recordings you performed on or own
The recording side. Neighbouring rights, paid when the actual recording is broadcast or played in public. Your distributor does not collect these either.

The obvious next thought is to register in all seventeen territories. Do not. Performer societies are connected through SCAPR's shared databases, and each one knows which sister society to pay a given performer through — so one correct mandate, normally with your home society, reaches the rest. The composition side works similarly through reciprocal agreements between PROs.
Signing a second mandate for a territory your home society already covers does not double your money. It creates a conflicting claim that can hold up payment from both. Some societies refuse you outright for this reason — Austria's LSG will only accept a performer who does not already have a mandate covering Austria.
