How to register with MCPS.

Register with MCPS (Mechanical Copyright Protection Society) to collect mechanical royalties every time your composition is reproduced — including each individual stream on Spotify and Apple Music.

Join MCPS (£100 One-Time Fee)

MCPS is administered by PRS for Music. Apply via the PRS website — if you're already a PRS member, you can add MCPS membership from your account dashboard.


Cost: £100 one-time admission fee (no annual fee).


MCPS collects mechanical royalties from:

  • Streaming (each play = one reproduction)
  • Downloads
  • Physical (CD, vinyl)
  • Broadcast reproduction

    Why this matters

    Every single stream on Spotify is legally a "reproduction" of your composition, generating a mechanical royalty. Without MCPS membership, these mechanical royalties are never paid out to you.

    Common mistake

    Thinking PRS and MCPS are the same thing. They're administered together but collect different royalties. PRS = the song was played. MCPS = the song was copied/reproduced.

    Ensure Works Are Cross-Registered

    Once you have both PRS and MCPS memberships, your PRS-registered works are automatically eligible for MCPS mechanical collection — no separate work registration is needed.

    Why this matters

    Works registered with PRS only collect performance royalties. Only when they are also associated with MCPS membership do they generate mechanical royalties from reproductions.

    Common mistake

    Re-registering all works separately with MCPS. You don't need to — MCPS uses your PRS works catalog. Just confirm the MCPS status is active on your account.
