How to register with PlayRight.

Register with PlayRight, Belgium's neighbouring rights society for performers, to collect royalties when your master recordings are broadcast on Belgian radio and TV or played in public spaces.

Understand SABAM vs PlayRight

Belgian artists frequently confuse these two:

  • SABAM = royalties for the composition (the song you wrote)
  • PlayRight = royalties for the performance/recording (your recorded performance)

    • A performing songwriter needs both. The Belgian producer/label share of neighbouring rights is collected by SIMIM — PlayRight represents the performer side.

    Why this matters

    Belgian recording artists who only register with SABAM forfeit their performer neighbouring rights from radio, TV, and public performance — a completely separate income stream.

    Common mistake

    Assuming SABAM covers the recording too. It covers the composition only — performers need PlayRight (and producers/labels need SIMIM).

    Register as a Performer (Free)

    Register at playright.be as a performing artist. Membership is free — PlayRight deducts a small administration percentage from collected royalties rather than charging upfront fees.


    You will need:

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Your artist name(s) and any pseudonyms
  • Bank account details (IBAN)
  • A list of recordings you performed on

    Why this matters

    PlayRight is the only Belgian society collecting performer neighbouring rights. Without registration, your share from Belgian broadcasters sits permanently uncollected.

    Common mistake

    Waiting until you have airplay to register. Register first — PlayRight cannot make unlimited retroactive claims.

    Declare Your Recordings with ISRCs

    Declare each recording you performed on via the PlayRight portal:

  • Recording title
  • ISRC code
  • Your role (featured artist, session musician)
  • Release year and label name

    • Detailed, accurate performer credits improve matching against Belgian broadcast logs.

    Why this matters

    PlayRight matches broadcast reports against declared ISRCs. Undeclared recordings cannot be attributed to you and their royalties stay in the distribution pool.

    Common mistake

    Not declaring featured appearances on other artists' recordings. Any recording you performed on qualifies — including guest features.
