## The six types of music royalties

1. **Performance royalties** — paid when music is played publicly (radio, TV, venues, live). Collected by Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) such as ASCAP, BMI, BUMA/STEMRA, GEMA, PRS for Music, SACEM.
2. **Mechanical royalties** — paid for the reproduction of a composition across streams and downloads; collected by bodies such as The MLC (US) and the Harry Fox Agency.
3. **Neighbouring rights** — paid to performers and master-recording owners for use of the recording; collected by societies such as SoundExchange (US), PPL (UK), and GVL (Germany).
4. **Sync royalties** — paid when music is licensed to film, TV, games, and advertising.
